The Leader of Sheffield City Council Cllr Tom Hunt welcomed the £24.1m investment in Stocksbridge during a visit of the Town Deal projects.
Cllr Hunt was invited by Stocksbridge and Upper Don councillor and Towns Fund Board member Cllr Julie Grocutt, to see the key areas of investment and receive an update on the next steps in delivering the ten Stocksbridge Town Deal projects.
The Department of Levelling Up, Housing and Communities confirmed the investment for Stocksbridge in December 2022 after the town was selected as one of 101 communities across the UK to be invited to bid for funding.
The Town Deal projects include the regeneration of Manchester Road with a new Library and Community Hub building at the heart of the new town centre. A shop front grant scheme and major placemaking improvements as well as a local hopper bus service are also planned.
The visit also took in Stocksbridge Community Leisure Centre and Oxley Park where a £500,000 accelerated funding grant has already delivered a brand new play area. Phase two work to upgrade footpaths in the park starts in the autumn and the construction of a new skatepark in Oxley Park will start in the spring.
The Community Leisure Centre is also receiving funding to develop a new Hydrotherapy Pool with detailed design work due to start in the next few weeks, updated plans for the Trails Project working in partnership with Yorkshire Water were also discussed.
Cllr Hunt said: “I am really pleased to have the opportunity to see first hand what a difference this £24.1m investment is going to make in Stocksbridge. These projects will transform key parts of the town and bring new opportunities to this part of our city. The work being undertaken in Stocksbridge really shows what effective partnerships and an ambitious vision can achieve for our communities.”
Cllr Julie Grocutt added: “We are at an important stage in our projects with some key milestones coming up and some projects starting in the autumn. It is great to have the opportunity to share the Board’s plans and vision for the town with the Leader of the Council and to have his support for what we are delivering in Stocksbridge.”
