In September 2019, the previous Government invited 100 places to develop proposals for a Town Deal, as part of the £3.6 billion Towns Fund.
Towns across England, including Stocksbridge, are working with the newly elected Government to address growth constraints and to ensure there is a clear path to recovery from the impact of COVID-19.
The previous Government issued a Towns Fund Prospectus with more detail about the objectives of the programme, which is available at https://www.gov.uk/government/publications/towns-fund-prospectus.
Every Town Deal requires an accountable body which is the local authority. In the case of Stocksbridge, this is Sheffield City Council (SCC) who is responsible for signing the Town Deal with the Town Deal Board and Government. The Council is the responsible body for the funding to go through and is also responsible for overseeing the governance of the Board. SCC has one seat on the Stocksbridge Town Deal Board.
The objective of the Fund set out by Government is to drive the economic regeneration of towns to deliver long-term economic and productivity growth through:
Minutes and agendas can be found on the Sheffield City Council website where you can also see the scheme of governance, setting out the role and responsibilities of the Stocksbridge Town Deal Board.
The Town Investment Plan for Stocksbridge was submitted in January 2021. The ten chosen projects were selected by the Board, guided by the key priorities and potential outputs set by the funding guidelines along with the priorities and concerns highlighted through the initial public consultation in Autumn 2020.
The Towns Fund Board is keen for local companies to have the best opportunity to tender for the work being delivered through the Town Deal investment in Stocksbridge. Sheffield City Council is the lead authority for the management and delivery of the work and we would encourage local contractors to register on the YORtender portal which can be found on the Sheffield City Council website.
The bid was shaped by the consultation which took place in 2020 across all the projects and was followed up with a consultation roadshow in 2021. Sessions focused on individual projects are also regularly held and advertised locally, as well as online surveys and questionnaires on different aspects of our projects. Keep an eye on our news section for details of our up coming consultation sessions and to view material and feedback at our recent session visit the consultation page. Sheffield City Council appointed a Towns Fund Communications Officer to keep the local community updated with all the latest Towns Fund news, as well as organising meetings and consultation sessions.
